i think the piano wires might even be 3d with cell shading
the frog princess scene might've even been a photo that uses a cartoon filter on it then they added a 3d town background
another trick i noticed is they got body animation on loop but a lot of animation on the bosses face
Those guys knows their stuff and applied modern software techniques real well
Square Enix was the first to copyright gameplay mechanics so it already existed. Tho cuphead's gameplay is basically just contra with some megaman+disney's magical adventure like boss fights so it's not original at all.
