What controller works on MAC?
I’m trying to identify if there is a USB controller that will work out of the box with Cuphead on a MAC. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

The only controller I've found that works right out of the box with no issues is the SteelSeries Nimbus, though that controller’s d-pad isn’t the best.

The wired Xbox 360 controller, and the older non-bluetooth Xbox One controller (connected via micro USB) are also 100% compatible, though you will have to install this driver for them to work properly, pause button and all.
https://github.com/360Controller/360Controller/releases

With those controllers you can play the games with no issues and have co-op working as intended.

If you're just looking to play single player, most controllers will work with the game, just connect it, go to the controller options to assign a controller and bind keys according to the on screen instructions. This worked for me for both the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller and an old Logitech controller I had lying around. There are issues when playing with these though: you cannot talk to NPCs on the map (go into the options to temporarily remove the controller to talk), you cannot navigate any of the menus including pausing the game (use the keyboard for all that), and there is no way for a second player to exit the equip screen. Just remember, if you want to settle with using the Switch Pro Controller, you have to disable Switch Pro Controller support in steam, only then will the game detect it as a generic controller.

I use a DualShock 4 (DS4) connected via a USB-A-to-USB Micro-B cable. (Micro-B is commonly referred to as "Micro-USB".)

The DS4 doesn't require any drivers, and many games, including Cuphead, have native support for it. For example, they refer to the Cross button as "cross", not "A", and have a predefined control scheme for the DS4.

Note:

  • If your computer has USB-C ports instead of USB-A ports, then use a USB-C-to-USB Micro-B cable instead.
  • The DS4 does not function correctly for most games when using the official USB wireless adapter.

Good to hear! Can you pause the game with the controller? Can you navigate the menus and play co-op properly?

Yes and yes. (You can pause by pressing Options.)

I haven't tried multiplayer mode.

i have an XBOX One controller (pre Aug 16 version) that one that connects to Mac Bluetooth without any other software (xboxce) . But the catch is i am not able to use any action buttons ,cuphead dude moves using direction stick in game but that is about it . Interaction prompts don't show up when moving towards points of interest. :( . Strangely it works properly for other games like Guacamelle, Mask of the Ninja, Dragon Boy etc.

I had that same issue. But curiously it works fine when it's connected via USB (with the aforementioned driver installed).

Hello Maximo, I have a question!
Are you using these controllers in 10.14.1? (mojave) The reason I ask is because I have not been able to get Steam to work well with my DS4 on MacOS. I plug it in and the system/steam both recognize it, but then Steam sends me into big picture mode, which doesn't work AT ALL for me. (and many others, if you peruse Steam's mac forum)

When I hook it up I use:
usb-c -> usb-a (female)-> usb micro (ds4 charge cable, usb a female to micro usb male)
In your post you advise against using the official wireless dongle, but does this extend to the regular official ds4 charging cable?

Are you using these controllers with or without big picture mode?

I have been using Logitech Wireless Gamepad F710 for almost all games playable on my MAC.

My DS4 functioned perfectly with my 2013 MacBook Pro, and it also functions perfectly with my new, 2018 MacBook Pro, which I received today. My new MacBook Pro is running macOS 10.14.1, and the DS4 is connected in the same manner as you described, except I'm using an Anker USB Micro-BUSB-A cable.

I don't use Big Picture, and, on my computer, it doesn't automatically open when I connect my DS4.

I'm not certain, but it may be necessary to do the following before Cuphead will detect the DS4:

  1. In Steam, choose SteamPreferences… from the menubar.
  2. Select Controller in the list.
  3. Press General controller settings.
  4. Disable PlayStation configuration support.
  5. Close the window.

I completely forgot about this. Sorry!

awesome, ty I will try it out.

every suppport thread I found said to make sure that the PS4 compatibility was setup otherwise it wouldn't work, since that only way was to configure through big screen mode. Seeing that big screen is not working for me, no dice.

I will try to set it up like a generic device instead when I get a chance.

on a side note: I am also using the 2018 mbp with 10.4.1, did you install steam on that machine before or after updating to mojave?

I appreciate that you took the time to answer my previous question and I am very sorry to repay you with follow-up questions :P

My Steam controller configuration:

I installed Steam after updating to macOS Mojave. I didn't copy any of Steam's configuration files from my previous computer or modify Steam's default controller configuration.

Is your DS4's battery charged? Are you able to use your DS4 to control other, non-Steam games?

My Nimbus+ does NOT work and is not recognized by the game or steam. I’ve reverted to an old 2010 Logitech wired controller. Pissed off that the nimbus doesn’t work.
