I got the chance to play the beta of Undertale way back when it started and I wasn't a fan of it then. It just didn't do anything for me. The next time I saw andything about Undertale was on reddit and the post was asking people what they thought about Undertale and how the story played out. I hopped into the comments section and asked some questions while making sure that people understood I had not played the game since the beta and that it wasn't my cup of tea then, how had the game changed since then.
Over the course of an hour my inbox was flooded by messages ranging from "Well the game has come a long way" all the way over to "How dare you hate this gem of a game that gives transgendered people hope that there is a place for them in the gaming world". And I hate to say that I had received WAY more hate mail than anything else out of my innocent questions and declaration that I didn't like what the game was in beta.
Because of this attack on my person I developed a seething hatred for Undertale. I can't stand the art, the music, or even the mere mention of Undertale because I am reminded of the hate I received about it. I have even avoided games that were compared to Undertale because of that hatred, mind you some of those I went back and looked at much much later but my point stands.
Is my story the norm? I have no idea, but I do know that gatekeeping and bigotry happens in these kinds of fandoms on a startling basis.
