PS4 controller issues?
Bought this game not all that long after it came out and had no prblems at all playing it with my dualshock 4, without any external programs needed.

I thought of finishing the game today but now my controller does not work. I tried all of the most reccomended solutions but they don't help, even if I get control back in the game, as soon as I touch the R1 button and then another button, player 2 gets added.

I want to fix it but what even caused it in the first place? Because it was working just fine.

I don't have any problem with any other game I use the controller for, just cuphead. And after 2 hours I'm sick and tired of troubleshooting it. Amazing game but ♥♥♥♥ it, guess I'll never finish it.

I think the problem is that Cuphead has native PS4 controller support which interferes with Steam's controller implementation; making Cuphead think a single controller is 2 controllers. Here's a solution I shared on another post:

Got it fixed for my PS4 controller.
1) Launch the game
2) Press the Steam guide button
3) Go to controller options and disable support for non-steam controller.

This stops the spawning of P2. Don't know what effect it has if a real P2 (another controller) was to join. Hope this helps!

Btw, I don't use any software for my PS4 controller. Just Steam.

Hey I will try this to fix my issues.

Got 2 PS4 controllers, one using the Dualshock USB and the other using Bluetooth, and only one works at a time. I've got a lot of other 2 player games where using two controllers is not an issue (eg. Sonic All-Stars Racing) but for some reason Cuphead throws up a wierd issue where it allows me to push start, and then no controller is recognized. It even shows when buttons are pushed in the key mapping section, but nothing saves. If your solution works for my issues to I will be over the moon!

Sadly, I experimented with your solution to fix my issue and it didn't work.

I just tested 2 PS4 controllers, both via USB. It works. Hurraaaaay!

Hmm, perhaps they'll work wired. But I don't have cables, only the charging dock. Aghh!

Oh, it didn't work?! What the f... Ok, try this: launch big picture > go to cuphead in your library > manage game > controller options > set "use steam configuration for non-steam controllers" to "forced off". Do the process again with your second PS4 controller. Make sure both are set to "forced off". Then launch the game.

Ok but, I think this is an issue with wirelless connections. I'll try all of those things and if they still don't work get some cables and share the results. Thank you.

Bluetooth or wired shouldn't matter. I'll test it tomorrow just in case.

I find using a cable and plugging it in after launching the game fixes the issue
I FINALLY found a fix for this issue! Big thanks goes to @Kaega for helping me find a solution.

Here's what I did to fix the connection issues.

1. Opened up 'Set up USB game controller', typed this in at the Windows 10 start menu.
2. The Dualshock 4 shows up. Then go to Properties>Settings> Reset to default

And voila, this issue has finally been fixed and I can now experience the closest thing to playing Cuphead on the PS4!

This may also help for other game pads such as Nintendo Switch controllers, etc.
