What is Cala Maria?

I mean, at first she looks like a mermaid, but I've never seen or known of a mermaid to fully hold herself up in water for such a long amount. A better guess is that she's more likely an octopus.

Here's What I Think:

- She Crashes Ships
While a mermaid's purpose is mainly to crash ships, I've never heard of her eating the sailers as well. A mermaid's purpose is to crash ships so that they can't attack the mermaids, but they let the sailors die on their own. They don't feast on them, let alone eat them whole.
But like the kraken or Ursula for that matter, with eight large tentacles, she could easily bring ships down for pleasure.

- Her Control Over Sea Creatures
Most seawitches/octopus-humans have the ability to control other creatures at their own will, while most mermaids cannot. Yet she has the ability to bring pufferfish from the ocean and cause them to float upward, in attempt to attack the player, as well as fish, seahorses, electric eels, and turtles.

- Her Electric Eels
When I saw this, I got a large Ursula vibe from her.
For anybody who's seen Disney's movie, "The Little Mermaid", you would know the villain is Ursula, the sea witch. You would also know that her two pets are these two electric eels that she uses to be her eyes from beyond her cave.
Once Maria summoned the electric eels to her aid to attack the player, it gave me a feel that she was at least a bit inspired off of the sea witch.

- Her Lower Body
I'm sure you guys are screaming at me saying that we can't be for sure because we never see her tentacles, but the again, if she's a mermaid, we've never seen her tail either. A tail would certainly come up while she moves herself across the sea, as that's how a mermaid's tail works, but tentacles would easily be able to move her lower body back and forth as she moves across the sea with Cuphead, and wouldn't be coming up out of the fact that she needs them to manouver herself.

For all wee know, she could be! Interesting theory.

I was under the impression that she sold her sold to the Devil to be beautiful...so maybe her true form is the Medusa witch thing, and her glamour-guise is the pretty mermaid?

She could also be a siren; I don't know my history well enough as I should, but didn't they eat the men they drowned...?
