Controller keeps adding player two
I'm using DS4 to allow me to use a PS4 controller while playing cuphead, but when I attempt to do anything such as jumping then shooting it's constantly adding player 2. This is making the game completely unplayable with a controller.

Just exit DS4Windows, connect your controller to your PC (bluetooth or wired) then launch cuphead and use your PS4 controller.

Did you START the game with a controller? (Like going to the start screen with a controller, not title screen)

You dont need to use DS4 windows to use a PS4 controller.
But please let us know if you are using wireless or wired on your computer.
If its wired then you dont need DS4, But if its wireless then I may have to do a bit of digging into how its works :squirtmeh:

You can't use wireless on a PC like this. You need to use wired. If you want to use a wireless controller, you still need to play wired with your charger cord to keep the controller linked with the PC. For PS controllers I mean.

Well then don't use ds4. Ds4 is more for PC controllers like those controllers that look like bootleg ps3 controllers.
The author of this topic has marked a post as the answer to their question.

Open the game AFTER you've turned your controller ON.
Alternatively (do these operations with your keyboard only) you can open the esc menu, select Remove Player 2 if you still have the second player active, open the esc menu again, select options, select controls, select Assign Controller, turn your controller ON if it wasn't already, click any button on your controller and use it from this point forward.

The fact that it's a ps4 controller has no bearing (and yes cuphead doesn't need ds4 in fact it only creates compatibility issues, not this one though).

Use Steam Big Picture Mode

Idk what's with all the dumb replies. You dont need ds4windows or inputmapper. Just close ds4windows/inputmapper and plug in your controller. Then run cuphead and it will work. You will even get the ps4 controller buttons in game. When you use ds4windows and its not running in exclusive mode, your computer will think you have both the ds4 controller and an Xbox360 controller. That's why cuphead will end up spawning player two.

Tldr: use ds4windows properly (exclusive mode) or don't use it at all

What is going on?? No one answered the initial question. I'm having the same issue. The game worked fine the first time I played the game, but now when I plug in my controller, then open the game my ps5 controller does not work. It acts as if my ps5 controller is almost like the keyboard? I can't exactly tell. If I start the game with my keyboard I can bring my controller in as p2, but I cannot use my controller as p1. I'm not using ds4 or input mapper, I cant remap my buttons in the settings, in order to start the game with the controller I have to push square which is weird. What is going on???
