Is it fun playing solo too?

I rarely play any platformers/dark souls-ish games but this game's art combined with the overwhelmingly positive reviews got me thinking about buying it...
Is it fun solo as it is with a friend?

well....do you prefer to die by yourself?, or with a friend?, only difference will be the fact that if you're solo you won't give up and keep going, but with a friend he'll most likely give up in 10 deaths or less

also, if you play by yourself you can play to get perfect scores and pacifist so it'll get pretty challenging and another layer of difficulty for completionists, while in 2 player it's just for fun....it's almost impossible you both will get perfect scores, short answer.....BUY DIS GEIM GOTYYYYYYYYYYYY (real talk)

Yes the game is still fun solo. It's probably more frustrating with a friend because they'll have no idea what they're doing. I've played solo and I've beat Inkwell Isle I without too many problems.

keep in mind the enemy hp gets buffed in 2 player, and no, it isn't harder, it's pretty much equal unless you don't know how to play without getting hit

It's better with a friend but it's perfectly fine in solo.
