What to buy first?
Obviously I got the smoke bomb. But Idk which shot upgrades to buy that will be useful. I'm still on the first island

First, get the spread shot, it's greata for crowd control and absolutely murders certain phases of some bosses. Then get the lober and eventually the charge shot. The charge shot has the most DPS of all the weapons and murders most bosses with only a few requiring a different weapon setup.

Awesome, is there any point in using other charms? Smoke Bomb seems to be the best by far and with only one slot I can't imagine anything being more useful

If you have trouble dodging attacks and need to learn enemy patterns, then homing is a good noob weapon. It lets you gocus on dodging attacks and platforming.

If you're looking for good weapons that will last you the whole game for the most part, then get CHARGE. It's the best weapon by far (in my opinion) and out damages the other weapons by quite a bit.

A second good weapon to have is the boomerang. It's a little wonky at first, but the damage is high and you can do trick shots and cover more ground.

Between charge and the boomerang, you should be set.
Take lobber for the dragon, especially on the second phase.

If it means anything, I have an S rank in most of the levels and have all the achievements minus the bugged one (rolling sixes), if you're worried about taking my word on it. :)

Smoke bomb is pretty much your friend for the whole entire game. If you're struggling with a boss, the 1 and 2 bonus heart upgrades are nice. They downgrade your attack power by 5% and 10% respecively. Not too shabby.

Very situational.... The parry sugar is helpful for gettign S rank on bosses like the frogs. It lets you safely duck and jump up immediately into the pink fireballs the shorter, fat frog throws for the required 3 parry score.

Coffee seems to charge up your special power in airplane levels, so there's that to consider as well.

I suggest getting the coffee for plane levels as the smoke bomb doesn't work in those due to not having a dash. The coffee will improve your DPS by helping you fill that super meter.

Edit: Also, in response to the comment above, screw the parry sugar, you can parry yourself and it's not worth losing invincibily for the whole fight while dashing for a one-time use only that doesn't do anything that you yourself couldn't do.

You are right that you should be able to parry by yourself for the whole entire game without the parry sugar, but the parry sugar allows you negate pink shots the moment your feet leave the ground. This is not perfectly possible without it. It makes getting S rank extremely easy for bosses that have very limited windows of time you're allowed to parry. The frog boss is very simple to beat without the use of smoke bomb, so the sugar allows you to focus on sucking up three pink shots by the time he finishes his first round of punches wtihout doing more than short hops. That's why I mentioned it's very situational and smoke bomb is more or less your friend the whole game.
