Well you don't need a controller since the game can be played with a keyboard. If your question was "is game worse with a keyboard?", well that depends on you. I play better with a controller but there might be people that play better with a keyboard.

it should play fine with a snes controller, the nes controller doesn't have enough buttons though

you need a controller or your hands will cramp bad use a wired xbox 360 controller and remember you can remap the controls to any button. have fun
