Is the steam version also DRM free or do i have to go for GOG?

I'm wondering if buying the steam version of the game will also allow me to play the game off a pendrive without installing steam (like the GOG version), this way i wouldn't have to give up on steam stats and achievements.

This can be verified by simply copying the game's folder on your desktop, removing steam_api.dll (if it's in the folder), closing steam and trying to open the game.
If the game runs without steam starting up, then the steam edition is also DRM free, otherwise it isn't.

in what world does steam and drm not go hand in hand? the platform itself is drm.
to get what you want to do you can simply buy it here and crack it.

There are games, such as factorio and undertale for example, that can be played by copy/pasting the steam installation folder without having steam installed. Those games are "drm free" despite being on steam.

I was wondering if cuphead was similiar in this regard.

I did get the game on GOG in the meantime. :)
