Went into the game thinking it was a platformer that was very difficult only to find out it's basically a boss battle game.
Did anyone else go into the game thinking it was going to be a typical (albeit extremely challenging) platformer?

If so, were you disappointed when you learned it's a boss fight game with a couple of short platform levels? If you answered yes to being disappointed, when all was said and done, did you regret your purchase?

I bought the game a few hours ago, absolutely adored it right away. Was fun. Was challenging. But I noticed there were no stages after the first 2. Like, wtf? I thought "Okay.. maybe this world is bosses only?". Then I ask around and find out it's basically ALL boss fights. That at one point it WAS all boss fights, and they only added those platforming levels to appease people who complained.

That made me exit the game because I didn't want to go over my 2 hours and not be able to refund. The thing is, I like the game, but I fear that doing nothing more than fighting bosses (basically a single player fighting game) will get old quick. Especially for 20 dollars?

What do you guys think? Is this game at least long?

Please no trolls. You're welcome to think what you want to think, but I am not being rude in my post and I would appreciate if the responses were not rude. So stuff like "if u hate it so much just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ refund it". I don't want to refund it. I want to hear from people who may have had a similar experience as me, but wound up keeping the game.

Thanks guys, you rock.

All the game's perks and attacks are generally just built around boss fights. I was surprised to find it's mostly boss fights but that's kind of the point given the game's plot.

Find boss, defeat it, take its contract. I can't see a game based around stealing the soul contracts of people having many platforming levels, especially when the sole purpose of the levels is mainly just getting coins for upgrades.

It's not like the lack of platforming stages somehow ruins the game anyways, I prefer it more as a boss rush if anything. If you like platforms, then I wouldn't recommend the game. If you enjoy bosses, then have at it.

What if I enjoy both of these things? You can like platforming games AND like Cuphead.

I actually started it up to play for a couple of minutes to influence my decision. I beat a boss and closed the game. 40 minutes passed. That should really tell me something right there. I was enjoying it so much so that I thought 40 minutes went by in a few minutes.

I have decided to keep it after that.

However, as for this

They could just have the platforming levels, where at the end, you fight a boss.

Anyway, I am going to keep it. But just FYI "If you like platforms then I wouldn't recommend the game?" I'm not really getting your meaning here. Do you not like platform games like Super Mario World, Super Mario 3, Donkey Kong Country (these are old examples, but still platforms). If you do like those games, by your own logic you shouldn't like Cuphead. Unless I am just completely stupid and missing something lol.

And that is why you have to get propelly informed before buying a game.

I thought it was a beat em up.

My friend gifted it to me, I only knew about the 1930's asthetic, nothing else.

Although, I wasn't dissapointed. I love boss battles, and this was a nice surprise.

All I meant was that if you're expecting a full fledge platformer from Cuphead then it's not something you may enjoy. As people have that misconception that's what the game's gonna be.

It's initially disappointing because you expect something along the lines of contra. Trailers and gameplay clips almost give the impression that the platforming sections ultimately lead up to the difficult boss fights, and it turns out both are their own separate levels.

But I think for most the disappointment will be brief because every boss fight is so meaty that it feels extremely good when you clear a difficult boss. Your only next thought is 'I want to try that again'.

I don't think it's a waste of a purchase and I'm glad to hear you decided to keep the game.

And for the record, the platforming levels aren't slip shod like someone else implied. I played all of them and I personally felt these levels received as much attention as any other boss fight. Each level has a distinct theme and if you enjoy challenging performers, I think you'll love the levels included here, not to mention the heavy use of platforming techniques within the boss fights themselves.

if you had done any research on this game you would have known it was going to be all about the bosses. from what I played so far its enjoying ( i am somewhere in world 2).

to anwser your question about it being long, from what I know there are three worlds plus one extra area. it all depends on how quick you can defeat the bosses, but Í'd say if you go in for expert mode after beating it all on regular I think you would hit around eight hours.

All bosses have a diffrent style of attacks ofcourse and new patterns to learn. you have expert mode after you beat it all on regular and with that (I would assume) the bosses gain more attacks and thus again new patterns to learn.

If that kind of thing speaks to you then i'd say keep the game. if you find it too hard or not fun enough on your own, get a friend in. it gives a new layer to the game.

hope I have helped you somehow

Expert mode just makes projectiles move faster and gives the bosses more HP. It's kinda underwhelming actually.

It does add a couple things like allowing the frog brothers to attack together and make warbles' egg shells attack vertically as well.

As someone who usually watches a video review (or some gameplay if it is not available) before buying a game, I knew exactly what I was getting. I am perfectly fine with the pace of the game, with the run and gun sections giving a bit of variety; there were just enough of them to keep things varied.
The game is worth 100% of its money.

It's literally in the games description...

Cuphead is a classic run and gun action game heavily focused on boss battles. Inspired by cartoons of the 1930s, the visuals and audio are painstakingly created with the same techniques of the era, i.e. traditional hand drawn cel animation, watercolor backgrounds, and original jazz recordings.

So, no, I was not surprised that is was about boss fights rather than platforming.

You're right. I should have looked beyond the trailers and the "Platformer" tag under the game. I am not being sarcastic, you are absolutely right.

Anyway, I decided to keep the game after playing for 5 minutes that turned out to be an hour. It's afun game, I just wish it had more stages.

You're absolutely right. I should have done more research. Honestly, I watched the trailer, saw the "platformer" tag and had a friend ranting and raving about it (He also repeatedly called it a platformer).

Anyway, in the end I decided to keep it. It's still a really fun game, and just because it wasn't what I expected, doesn't mean I shouldn't keep it if Iam having a boat load of fun.

This is exactly right. The disappointment went away when I played again for 5 minutes that wound up being an hour. When you can play a game and have so much fun that an hour goes by like nothing it's a good sign to keep the game. So I did. :)

I love games where the boss fights are the most important part. Anyone know any similar games like that?
