Mario is a platformer where you smash your face in to metal blocks and collect mushrooms... I see nothing that remotely resembles that here...
Instead I see a blue and red guy running around shooting ♥♥♥♥. So yeah, it's more comparible to Contra.
When comparing a game to Contra you don't even need the cliche "It's like Dark Souls" tagline... No... it's just plain Contra, because Contra was difficult as hell at the time...
This guy is an embaressment if he's been a gaming journalist for the past 18 years... He wasn't a gaming journalist when he was one years old...
This guy is probably like 35 to 40 years of age if not older, meaning he should know WTF Contra is... what a tool.
Playing the other side here, do all people know what Contra is? To me, it sounds more like the famous Reagan scandal (yeah, I know which "Contra" you meant, I'm just saying not all do). Plus, I think he's aiming for younger people, who also doesn't know what Contra is. On the other hand, Mario is a well-known brand.
Though I do agree, the term is indeed very strange (guess that's why his publication is not popular). I'd say it's more like "Oldies Megaman but with more bosses than platforming"

Edit: Thorough takedown by Rags. Showcases the hyper-defensive journalism circus surrounding the vid.

I've seen furries that were more level-headed than these journalists.
I guess pretty much every arcade game made in the 90's is like DARK SOULS then. You know, because they're difficult.
What a revolutionary game. I can't wait until it breaks the 4th wall in our society and people just start to refer to any hard situation as being "like Dark Souls".
