So how do you hack the tutorial door?

I feel really stupid about this.

I start the single player game, I get control of my dude/tte, The tutorial tells me to shot some dude who takes about 300 rounds to the face before he dies.

Then the tutorial tells me to hack the door - I walk over to the panel, click on it and a little spinner with 1's and 0's shows...

And the door stays locked.

Am I the dumbest dude alive or is there something really cunning that I am missing about hacking doors.

The door should turn green for a bit once the hack is completed, but it's on a timer, so you need to sprint (double-click) to get through it.

is that the door where you already have your NPCs .. than you need to hack first the terminal at the bottom of the stairs and then the one direct in front of the door ...

No, it's the very first door. But the soldier isn't a good enough hacker to keep it open for more than a moment, which can obviously be confusing for some people, since this is not the first time basic hacking has come up.

Thanks for the help. I think it is just the lack of feedback that anything has happened that got me since thr door doesn't even slide open.
