TRIBES 3: Rivals

TRIBES 3: Rivals

Will they ever recapture the magic of Starsiege?
The ridiculous physics, crazy weapons, custom server-side mods, map editing. and spamming of "SHAZBOT!" I believe made it their best. Could that magic be captured again in modern day Tribes? I'd like to dream, but I'm not sure if any modern day game could capture the craziness of this game back in the day. The unfettered rawness of Starsiege combined with the early modding, map making community, and campiness held it strong for so many years. (I think people still play it.)

Any idea if they tried to reignite that magic in this version, or is it going to be like their last: fun for about a month or so, then an instant falloff.

I feel like the audience for this type of game is of a dying generation. Sadly I don't think there will ever be an audience like we used to have; we will never get that magic again. VGS

I don't agree with that at all. The game Squad is way harder to manage than anything like Tribes ever was and people love that game.

Also just inventory management stuff. People adore survival games and whatever. Those games are way more complex than what there was. Other than simulation games. People want depth, not just mobile clones.

If you build it well enough and it's fun, people will play it.

Well, for one, you cannot spam VGS anymore. VGTG

You wont have the support that T1 had either. Diamond Multimedia and their hosted servers kept T1 alive for a long time. o7 Clan [DMM]

Yeah, but the skill ceiling of tribes games is so immensely high, that I feel like it makes new people not want to play. It's like quake champions; it's always had it's small, but dedicated community but it will never grow like it was in the old days.

Tribes Ascend is dead in few month after it born.
but Tribes Rivals will die before it born.
sorry, its new record.

Starsiege was actually a different game entirely. Tribes was just a game set in the same universe.

I miss actual Starsiege - that was a GREAT game. Way better than MechWarrior. Sadly Hi-Rez owns all the IP now so I don't expect to ever ride my PBW Pred again....

I don't think so, it's not the same type of "gamers" either, I've played a few matches and most are just camping their base on defense, literally 10 out of 12 are defense because they think people care about their kills.

Bring back the MX building mod!

Be careful, gentleman. They are deleting any discussion of nostalgia related to Tribes gone by.

All of the "discussions" posted by us vets pleading with the DEV team to develop (not clone) a Tribes game that will stay true to what Tribes and Tribes 2 stood for have been silenced.

All this and not even out of an alpha test.

This speaks volumes as to their intentions.

They are committed to developing a game that will be a travesty and abandoned just as Ascend was thrown onto the trash heap.

Please subscribe to this thread and see how long it's up before getting zapped.

I just randomly searched for "Tribes" in the Store - Starsiege: Tribes + Tribes 2 were my favorite MP games of all time. Hands down. I'm very, very biased however - as I was on the 100 person Alpha team pre-launch of SS:T. I still have the massive stack of dev burned CDs, starting @ like V1.0 on a white disc w/ barely any textures layered in.

EDIT!

I tried it - while it does not capture the magic of SS:T or Tribes 2... it's pretty damn good in terms of mechanics. It is not only 4v4. There is 12v12 CTF.

Do I miss the slightly slower pace? Yes.
Do I miss the vehicles? Yes.
But are the mechanics there? Yes.

I just have to get used to the bump in speed. And hope that there are newer modes/larger maps + vehicles in the future.

But as of now? This is the most fun I've had in a MP FPS in quite awhile. And it's an Alpha Demo.

Stays on wishlist!

I installed the demo, but, 4v4? Ewww... what?

I'll try it, but, I'm concerned.

I miss 1 & 2 so much. Nothing has captured that feeling in a long time

Updated my comment after trying it. Pleasantly surprised. Not the same feel as Tribes 1/2... but, solid start IMO.

I don't think the audience is dying, I think that they lost their way when they started to focus on trying to makes Tribes a competitive/sports platform, rather than an open world ctf game.
