New campaign space content
Soo, now that we get a persistent world map it sounds like a good plan to just build a space dock and nuke everything from orbit. Of course you'd still have to protect your resource extraction bases, but you can usually do that pretty easily with a low orbit ion cannon kind of thing.

Soo, if it's possible to just laser everything from space, is there going to be any kind of counter to spaceships (except other lasers, probably)?

or a rocket with a lot, and i mean a lot, of fuel and thrusters

P.S- this new persistent world campaign seems awesome! And co-op coming around christmas!!!!! what a great gift!

The rocket one will not work, since the rocket fuel cannot burn in space :P

And yea, cant wait for the new content to come out, and co op? oh im so gunna play the shiznit out of it
Rocket fuel cannot burn in space? Lul... then how did they manage to land on the moon? XD

Still, if you have a spaceship that doesn't need any kind of propulsion or ammunition, you can just fill it to the brim with lasers and use the same lasers to fend off missiles that are aiming for you, so you would need a huge swarm of humongous missiles to engage a spacecraft. It's even worse considering that your missiles have to fight gravity on their way up, too.

Maybe some kind of ultra-high-velocity cannon or long range cruise missile thrusters would make it easier to defend yourself from space attacks.

lol I was thinking of the jet engines...didnt think that comment through...In the game the jet engines dont work in space, so you have to use the ion? thrusters...that and watching youtube videos it looks like they always fall short, running out of fuel when they hit space
Yeah jets use oxygen to burn fuel and only work in an atmosphere. Rocket fuel is a mix of something like hydrogen combined with an oxidizer (liquid oxygen, so you basically bring your own atmosphere with you)
Or it's solid fuel that burns like a new years fireworks rocket or those flares which even work under water.

The US is working on railguns which are able to fire solid slugs out into space from a ship or ground base, so that could be another option. They also used kinetic kill missiles to shoot down sattelites, too, but I think those wouldn't pack enough of a punch to pierce proper armor and deal enough damage to a spaceship.

I know how effective low orbit ion cannons are already, and if you could just build an entire fleet of starships and move those across the entire map, you could basically nuke all the hostile factions fortresses from orbit without them having any kind of chance to fight back.

On the other hand, if the enemy would be throwing spaceships at you, and you didn't have spaceships on your own to counter them, it would be pretty meh as well.

The only plus is, that cannons and missiles are kinda awkward to use from space, so all in all you'd probably just need a good way to defend against lasers.
