Ship steering wobble under AI control
Anyone know what causes a ship to "wobble-steer" or "zig-zag" when under AI control? Every stinking Ai controlled ship I've built, when I put it in combat mode and load an enemy ship, my ship does this fishtail movement like it's constantly turning the rudder right-left-right-left non-stop, unless it's making a turn, then it's smooth. Driving me nuts!

It's a known issue and will be fixed in the future.
Has the future come to pass yet? As far as i can tell this is still a problem.
It's a bit annoying but it has helped more than hurt for me. It tends to make the enemy less able to hit me, especially in a smaller aircraft.
In terms of why it happens I believe it has to do with a lack of sufficient decimal places when measuring the angle to a target
why dont they fix it....
this is now fixed if you attach a PID set to yaw on the AI, it just takes some setting fiddling

It requires some serious changes to the AI. Currently Naval AI tries to maintain an ABSOLUTE (0 degrees deviation) course, which leads to wobble if the ship is light weight.
yes but it seems like the bug is 2 years old... i dont mean that the game is not good but a known bug should be fixed soon, not like in space engineers with a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ workaround

It's not a bug, it's down to how the AI functions. Naval AI torelates no divergence in course changes cause by waves, which is the cause for the wobble. One option is to make the ship heavy and big so it doesn't get affect by waves. Or use a PID
however, ok it is not a bug, but it could get fixed :P but i understood thanks.
If you're willing to waste 2 hours trying to figure out how it works, use a PID.
Set the values to no effect and change one at a time until the ship behaves the way you want.
Use PIDs, its easy to make them work.

Once you start, you won't stop, until you have perfect 3D stabilization.

Feel free to take one of my boats apart for PID settings.

Here's an unarmed speedboat that is super stable due to pitch, roll and yaw active stabilization via PIDs.

I've noticed if you use a PID you will lose a little speed, about 1 per 10 speed, but it will work absolutely to smooth out the jinking.
a little bit of wobble isnt even that bad, it throws off the enemy ai aim
