where does the game save the ships to?
I know it isn't the same folder as where the game is installed, and I wanna back them up... ?

Your profile and vehicles are saved in "My Documents" folder. Acually the game already backs up your creations for you.

Does it? Reinstalled windows some months back and the game didnt save my files then...

Lol. If you reinstalled windows the entire profile folder was deleted so obviously the backups were gone too.

... What's the point of backups if they dont last you through a windows reinstall...?

Because my friend reinstalling windows is supposed to format your entire computer

You didn't answer. What's the point of backups if they don't last you / can be usd over several PC's / reinstalls?

Need to back up to an external hard drive or a pendrive. System reinstall will just get rid of everything on the installed hard drive regardless of importance.

The game's own backups are supposed to save your builds from mistakenly being deleted or if somehow they get corrupted. They arent supposed to be able to save from a windows reinstall. Not even the game lives so why would your profile?

Anything you think it's valuable should be transferred to another device, as gamer800 pointed out, before you run a windows reinstall.
