Intercept Missiles
Hey guys, so I made some interception missiles, fast little missiles that are meant to intercept enemy missiles and take them out, but for some reason they constantly fire, which uses up ammo like crazy and just looks kinda dumb. so is there a way to set the AI to only fire the intercept missiles when there are missiles in range to engage?

Also, I'm looking at possibly getting into LUA coding, any suggestions for somewhere to learn, or tutorials or something. I don't know how to code LUA at all and am a complete newb at coding, but I figure it might be useful to use some when it comes to certain weapon systems and possibly control mechanisms in the future if I get crafty.

yes
few things you can do

#1 fire the missiles manually into space, follow them so you can see thier max range, set the local AI controller to that range or a tad less , do the same with minimum range setting.

#2 you can also set it up the Staggered Fire Block ( forgot name brain derp atm about to log on myself just got home from work ) to where its Rapid fire or Not.

cant help you with any LUA stuff... im a complete ♥♥♥♥♥♥ in that department I know of that block in game.. I see it and Im pretending It doesnt exist. ( mainly b/c I have no idea how it works or the mystical forces that make it work )

yeah about the only coding I can do, is basic Script coding.... b/c I like to change alot of the core script files of alot of my strategy games to mod them to the point where the game is how I think it should be or the funnest for me. ( usually make it harder than hell...(godlike asian difficulty level engaged) basically... if a game isnt Super damn hard and make you want to pull your hair out then I do NOT want to play it or anypart of it, I perfer a challenge even if its a tad on the suisidal side. its just my fellow Masochist comming out... is what one of my good online gaming buds calls it.

fyi just incase you didnt know...

Noun
masochist ‎(plural masochists)

someone who enjoys pain, or who derives pleasure from harming oneself or being harmed by others.

pretty much described my gaming mentality in 1 sentence.

nah for interceptors you need to use an automated contrl block. set local weapon controller max range to ZERO. set up your ACB close to the missile controller, make sure its set to only effect the interceptor missile controller.

LWC settings http://prntscr.com/8nu70e

Do NOT have a local weapon controller for the interceptor missiles. Instead, use an 'automated(?) control block' set to fire weapon systems whenever a hostile missile is detected within some distance (this will depend on the range of your missiles). Make sure the ACB's affect range is low so that it doesn't fire other weapons. And, of course, make sure you have missile warners with a link to an AI mainframe.

EDIT: Or as Putin suggests, you can have a weapon controller set to a 0-maximum range. Basically, just make sure the missile doesn't fire like a normal weapon would.

yeah i saw somwhere that you didnt need the LWC, never got around to testing it though and was unsure about it having mainframe connection to the warners without it.

Interceptors:

1) Set up a missile bank with a missile controller and a staggered fire if you want it (Make sure you are using interceptor warheads!).

2) Place an Automated control block nearby. You will also need an AI mainframe on your ship that is connected to a missile detector (The AI doesnt need to be attached to the missiles in any way, its only there to detect the missiles.)

3) The ACB needs setting up as follows:

Set the left panel of the Automated Control Block to activate when "Hostile missile detected within <range>"
Set the middle panel to "weapon" and at the bottom of the middle panel set the range in blocks from the ACB to the launcher (eg: set it to 2 if its touching it).
Set the right panel to "Fire weapon" and set the range slider to the range you want the interceptors to launch at incoming missiles - about 600 is generally good for small interceptor missiles - The enemy missile will be coming straight at you so you can fire your interceptors before they are in range!

The same setup can be used to make flare launchers as well.

Spawn in a duster and test it - have fun

Another quick question for you guys, the detector/tracker/radar, are any of those worth it right now or are they pretty much obsolete until they make it so the AI don't just see targets from a mile away.

Detector and Radar are useless. I think the tracker is too, but don't quote me on that.
