What is the most effective armor layout?

As you all know, a warship gotta take damage (or dish them out) And as im building my ship, im seeing that im spamming sloped armor with blocked armor in a 2 block, large airgap, 2 sloped blocks, another airgap, sloped armor with a block behind, and another set of sloped armor. I know this is spaghetti armor with the amount of slope but is that any good? And is there better armor layouts that save space, weight, and materials for the best protection per meter? And the thing im trying to protect from is AP shells so what is the best counter for that?

torpedo bulges and slat armour (ex: tanks/AFV's) work well, after that you only need 1 airgap

also build vertical and face the enemy at like 20-45° to increase the armour facing the enemy
