They do... something, but not enough to tbe worth the bother.
The 'legs' of the L are made up of sail attachment blocks running out from the sail main block (which sits in the joint of the right angle). At the far ends of the legs you put the sail winches.
If you mount the whole assembly on a spin block and add a sailing behaviour to your AI, the ai should be able to use the sails.
With ACBs and spin blocks you can make masts that adjust to wind direction to try and keep vessel moving into any direction chosen. But wind mechanic only in this game. To have any real motion you have to be riding directly into it.
There are open close commands to let ACBs maximize wind catch ability.
Plus Breadboard can be used to set up more complex commands to even further get most out of wind power.
Sailing ships need main sails These sails rest in the middle and do need to swivel 45 degrees to grab wind from cross currents and set at a 90 when wind is at vessels rear for max grab.
They also need front and rear sails to tilt in and out to stabilize in turns and help with turns.
This game dosent have ropes and pulleys to adjust sail angles it has full spinblocks we can place full masts on. This makes things easier.
Think about a simple sailor ship. Lets talk about the Santa Maria. Main sail upper smaller main sail. Front and rear small main sail.
Front and rear sail can swivel 30 degrees to twist into wind to help hull turn.
Middle sail is semi fixed. Very front of ship has a sail that runs from front mast to tip of ram.
This sail is to give stability when turning into the wind and keeping ship from leaning to far.
The rear sail also has a length sail that is moved opposite of rudder to catch wind and tug rear around.
If you build an in game ship.
With sails that move with rudder command to keep sails in wind direction.
(Rudder left. Rear sail right. front sail left... er i think this is right lol)
Or have sails on independent controls for maybe better wind grab.
I hope this ramble helps. For better help on spin block set up and sail control watch an actual video on modern sailing. The concepts do apply to this game from RL.
