Game randomly hanging
Hey all, anyone having issues with the game being unplayable due to hanging every 45 minutes? No crash or anything, the screen freezes and the game stops responding. Driver issue maybe?

I'm building a ship and I've lost the will to live at this point, I keep losing an hour's worth of progress, usually when I start thinking about saving, Obviously.

No errors or crash dumps due to game hanging and not crashing, so I don't think a bug report would be useful.

Running win10 x64, 16 gb DDR4 RAM, i5 9600 and GTX 1070. On an SSD.

Drivers are up to date clean install. Win10 is also brand new and clean, rebuilt the PC a few weeks ago.

Thanks for reading!

Can you upload a log file from appdata/local low/brilliant skies/from the depths/output_log.txt after this crash occurs? A new build is coming out on Friday or Saturday that should fix a number of issues. Sorry you are having this issue!

I also have this issue , would really love a fix

I am often saving out of fear to crash but sometimes forget and lose progress

Thanks for the quick reply, here is the output log. https://pastebin.com/8HyAFxac

A clue may be that this crash was preceded by the some kind of video issue?

There was screen flashing every 3 or 4 seconds (just for a split second), like small garbled rectangular textures on the screen. Very subtle and spread out though. The game itself wasn't hitching upon these brief flashes. I had maybe 10 seconds before the game froze. This immediately pointed me to gpu artifacting but in any other game, (even a demanding VR game), I can't force the GPU to artifact in any other title. Space engineers or a modern Total War are fine for example.

Also the game was still "running" in Task Manager. Pressing esc with the frozen screen would make the cursor appear as if I could open and close the menu. The audio was still going too.

Let me know if you want me to check event viewer or dxdiag or something!

I'm afraid neither of those logs shed any light on the issue (the log must be uploaded immediately after the session ending in a crash as the log is overwritten each time) (and often the log is no good when it comes to crash to desktops either...)

That sounds very odd rssics. The new build is live now- let me know if you experience the same issue in this new build. The new build should be a lot more stable in a number of ways (touch wood) but keep me updated on what you find.

As a QA Tester my self i'll attempt to shed some light through more detail about this issue as i have personally had this a few times now.

Description:

This bug doesn't crash the game ever it just freezes, the game still responds to inputs made by the player.

The player can still place and remove blocks and has audible feedback for this.

The player although can't see the UI can still select blocks after pressing E to access the block selection UI.

Similarly the esc brings up the cursor but the UI doesn't show. However the player can still click on the menu items and gets audible feedback when doing so. (I did manage to save the ship i was working on from being able to remember where all the buttons are - luckily :) ).

Results:

Title visually freezes but all functions and inputs still work as intended.

Note: This is on the new build, and that was all i could possibly test from memory of the new UI, and i'll try to repro this to see if i can find out any more info for you guys.

Thanks for the info, I got the game to freeze this time, might not be the same bug. Was simply placing metal blocks around an advanced turret. Screen froze, windows hang detection kicked in a few secs later. Here's the output log if it can help.

12k blocks build, no visual issues this time.

Also if it is any help i'm running similar specs to rsslcs

i5 - 9600k
16GB
1070ti
and the game is also running from an SSD (Specifically a 500GB Samsung 860 evo)

Hmm, windows didn't assume the game was stuck in a loop for me

I found a trace of it in event viewer.

The program From_the_Depths.exe version 2017.4.25.47644 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Security and Maintenance control panel.

i've managed to find this, which happened around the time the games visuals froze:

Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

Plus two hardware errors that posted 3 seconds later

Also Nvidia did release a new graphics driver on the 23rd and this seems to be a new issue that has popped up recently not sure if that could be the culprit.

hmm, after checking, I indeed have nvddmkm errors from a crash on the 24th, tens of them, graphics exceptions on ESR and GPC 1 and 2, various "constant out of bounds" and coordinate violation stuff, also "variable string too large". All at 21:36:13. However this is from a previous crash that I have no log of sadly. :( And strangely this hasn't happened again since that one time.
Xenyn Jul 27, 2019 @ 12:21am
I do not think it s a Nvidia problem since I also encounter this on my Intel HD
Danny Decheeto Jul 27, 2019 @ 12:31am
cool thanks for clearing that up for us, also how do you play on intel graphics that must be dire.

Thanks for the log- will have a look at that asap. Sounds like there might be a few different issues here. For those of you with issues traceable to the GPU try using CPU ocean option and see if that avoids the issue... That would help narrow things down a bit (or exclude the ocean as the culprit).
Danny Decheeto Jul 27, 2019 @ 11:08am
Yep GPU Ocean is not causing this
