Personally I never use them, but if you have the power to run decent strength shields, might as well.
With planars you can pay as little as 1000 engine power to get a 1/3 deflect chance and 70 laser AP reduction on a 25x25 plate. Ring shields, if you use them correctly, have similar efficiency.
So with a normal engine putting out about 100ppv, we're talking just 10 cubic meters of space to power a 30% armor improvement on a large section of a craft. Easily worth it.
My issue with my builds is how modular I make them, and no matter how many redundancies I put in, the Megalodon still chews my ships up. I increased the power generation of one of my BBs going from small steam setup to medium and put shields along the sides. I had to play with the settings because I wasnt generating a bumload of energy and I didnt want to leave myself short handed when my lazer defenses are being overworked. However, after I put those shields on the sides of that ship and got them set up properly, the Megalodon sank 4 out of 5 times.
