Multiplayer is kind of broken at the moment, due to game wrecking lag and desynchronization. But Fields is right. It's far simpler to just both design craft and exchange blueprints, play them off against each other.
I'm not sure if anything's going on presently, but there used to be a lot of tournaments where a group of players send their blueprints to a third party, who then stages death battles and posts the fight videos online.
I'm talking about full on map battles where you and the other person fight for control over resourses and territory, not just indevidual battles.
And even then, if they atleast tried it, it would be the most unfun thing to play
The f**ked balancing (Which is somewhat forgetable against AI, but isnt against real people) broken boarding, stupid tactical AI, dreadful large scale combat performance, broken skill points, hand fulls of exploits, absolutely f**ked player to player combat with weapons it would render it only playable with friends and a massive list of self imposed rules.
Not only that, any quick match wouldnt be a quick match at all, campaign time clocks at tens of hours of lenght and nobody has time for that, even with safe and load features.
You could, in theory play the PvP campaign virtually, joining some roleplaying group, managing your resources/other things you cannot do in game on the forums while the battles would be actually simulated in the game.
There have been some attempts

But due to internal drama (and weak leadership) its just a husk now
Though, there have been some attempts to resurrect it recently

I know with a couple of craft and building and messing around, you'll absolutely be fine
Both modes players spawned about 2km from eachother in a small base within a resource gathering zone with a heart stone they have to protect, and resources were rather limited along with premade designs not being allowed which made it more about actually building fast and trying to counter whatever the other team built.
