i never even use g, to rotate i just hold tab and used wasd
if you press tab it will let you move the camera around but it will still follow your character, if you press e twice it will stop following your character.
if you get your character far enough away from the vehicle to have the ammo, engine, fuel, etc all disapear then pressing b in an open space will start building a new vehicle, but if you press b when looking at another vehicle it will start building on that one.
and did you watch the youtube tutorial? i think you can find it ingame, it helps allot
If you really need to, place a metal block or something so you can place the equipment (well, typically it is equipment), and then remove the metal again - if the equipment borders another block, it will stay.
Or you can prefab the equipment you want placed.
I dare say it takes some getting used to, but is in no way inferior to other systems - in FtD I'd definitly recommend it, as it's easier to place blocks in enclosed spaces, or place one block every 2m that way.
Same for rotation. If I need to place several blocks in a certain orientation, I will lock the orientation, otherwise I throw the camera around.
There are options to change both settings though (mouse-based building, and orientation-locked-by-default), so you can adjust that if you want.
In the block-selection menu, there are blocks to place a new vehicle, fortress, or structure. Same tab as turrets and spinners (new constructables? Can't check the name right now, it's pretty low in the list). That's another way to build a new craft, in addition to what mellow said.
Screenshots/vids, reproduction steps. Could be a fixable issue, could be that the devs would be happy to see a bug report. Maybe it's even fixed in the dev branch, no idea.
Some blocks don't have placements on all sides, usually you can see this by the little green nobs that stick out from the part you want to place. (example, missile controller)
You're better of using the TAB key to rotate everything. G is handy for if you're already looking the way you want it to point to but holding TAB gives you better rotation control.
The best way to start a new vehicle is to either use delete all vehicles first and simply use B to start your new vehicle. Or us (in build mode) the new vehicle option after first moving your build cursor to a free area.
Nope, I recently started playing (steam sale of course) and I'm already doing well in the campaign and have designed ships, subs and thruster aircraft by now. Not pretty, not perfect but they work.
I totally understand where you're coming from, personally the video's from youtuber Lathland helped me the most.
Once you get the basics and are used to the odd way of building it actually is a really great game where you can dunk in a lot of hours.
I hope this info helps a little. good luck!
I was somewhat frusterated when I got done with this post because the annoyance of that visual bug + the feeling of complete cluelessness had me heated a little bit, but I'm better now and I am glad that everyone here is willing to give me some tips.
I added you so I can show you what I'm talking about with the visual bug, maybe you could help me or tell me if you also have the same issues.
