Countering torpedoes - setup tips?
I happen to know that it is possible to shoot torpedoes with lams and that torpedo decoys and missile inties can work on them too. I've seen some references at least, and some advanced designs.

I want to try my hand at setting up such systems myself now, but I've never done so before and could use a prod in the back by the pro's.

LAMS work as normal. Place normal LAMS, place passive sonar (and connect to AI), done. They lose a bit of their power due to the water though, but they'll still be quite effective.

Sonar buoys only work on small designs. Large ships would need to spam them by the hundreds to decoy more than one or two torps.

To use them, a 1-block missile with a sonar buoy and a ballast tank is probably the best. Possibly buoy + regulator, or 2m sonar + ballast + regulator. Alternatively, attach the buoy to an interceptor. Keep in mind that you need a sonar buoy holder for each active sonar buoy - but it does not need connection to an AI to decoy torps.

Last thing about them: They have no bonus for stacking them. One missile with 2 buoys is as good as 2 with one buoy.

For torpedo interceptors, either wait for the next patch (-> ACB overhaul, will allow you to set "if hostile torpedo closer than..."), or place them on a CIWS-turret (CIWS-controllers will control any weapon) - and connect the CIWS-controlled to an AI without passive radar and without munition warners. CIWS-controllers only take their own AI's detections, so connecting it to an AI with a passive sonar but without passive radar and munition warners will limit it to torpedos.

Or you could just use "proper" CIWS, which'd also work, if it can shoot at the torps.

Okay, that 's the kind of stuff I was hoping to hear. Many thanks!

As for LAMS and interceptors: If you limit LAMS to short(ish) range (like, 50-100m), they won't lose that much power. If they're capable of taking out CRAMs, they're likely good enough for torpedos.

And afaIk all interceptors track the same target - so while you can put more in the water than the enemy has torps, they'll still start to suffer when more torps approach. Try to add LAMS or CIWS to deal with the torps that do get through.

I'd also suggest having some spikes on your hull to stop the torpedoes before they hit the actual hull. Not sure how effective this is but it'll at least save you from the first full on volley.

its always a good idea to plan for WHEN they hit, not IF, i built redundant compartments that can be flooded with no actual loss to ship performance whilst being quite helpful when undamaged, make them out of wood or alloy and use spaced armor to prevent interior damage, multiple compartments also help with damage control.
dont forget the AI generally only aims for ammo racks or your AI core soo use this to your advantage

You can counter it with a warp drive.

's a bit drastic innit?

All is fair in love and war. Use warp and be torpedoed no more.
