A single resource makes it easier from a management perspective though, and allows you to more easily play the game like an RTS, so its not without merits. Many good RTS games have 2 resources, including gold or electricity/power based ones. Some have 3. You rarely see anything higher than 3 though in a normal RTS.
But barring that, I don't think it's likely split resources will be coming back soon. that said, fuel, ammo and power are also resources, depending on the way you look at them. everything now just branches of from material.
One downside of the old system is that you would often be perpetually short on metal. that is, if you didn't hilariously overmine all your infintie resource zones with dozens of extractors. Heh.
I can think of a few RTS's that have more, like Kohan or empire earth 2 or supreme ruler; but they're pretty niche.
Glad that crap is gone.
i would not mind that at all just to enjoy old FTD once more even if i have to deal with some of the weapons :P like not having my PAC weapons as i know they was post econ change.
13.1.2016 - old build in the beta selection menu still has the old resources. That's the easiest and quickest way to go back in time.
The complicated option that requires a minimum of tech saviness is using the depot downloader, which will allow you to access even older game versions, or any single one that doesn't happen to have a beta associated with it. It's best in my experience to reference the old forum update thread with manifest upload dates to get the exact version you want.
Trouble is you can't use the latest vehicles / mods etc....... and didn't units all look very blocky way back in '16?
Ah well, at least you have the option to choose your poison!
Anyway, it was all an "excuse" to cover up the game's artificial stupidity. Multi-res ain't coming back. Ever. "Discussions" caused a lot salt back when they first reductionised it to "fuel", "energy" and "materials"....... and worse when they reductionised it all AGAIN further!
Simple quality of life additions like the undo function didn't appear until 2019, for example. The game and tooltips were generally less transparent and informative and there was a plethora of more and less severe buggs.
But they have their charm. I occasionaly dig out really old game versions for a quick campaign playthrough. They were generally quite a bit easier too, with my current experience.
