what happened to resources
the good days are gone when you had to collect different resources such as metal natural (wood) scrap oil and crystal. now its all one resource and it makes the game too easy. at the very least there should be a button to change between the modes. also bring back the old cannons but hidden in the game files (disabled but in the mod menu)

I agree that the old resources system was better in some ways (could probably have just removed crystal and renamed "scrap" to "alloy"). It allowed for one to potentially need to go for certain designs based on what resources you had access to.

A single resource makes it easier from a management perspective though, and allows you to more easily play the game like an RTS, so its not without merits. Many good RTS games have 2 resources, including gold or electricity/power based ones. Some have 3. You rarely see anything higher than 3 though in a normal RTS.

There are some guides out there for running older game versions outside of steam; if you want I could try and find them again.

But barring that, I don't think it's likely split resources will be coming back soon. that said, fuel, ammo and power are also resources, depending on the way you look at them. everything now just branches of from material.

One downside of the old system is that you would often be perpetually short on metal. that is, if you didn't hilariously overmine all your infintie resource zones with dozens of extractors. Heh.

I can think of a few RTS's that have more, like Kohan or empire earth 2 or supreme ruler; but they're pretty niche.

The bad days where 4 resources were useless and only metal was important.
Glad that crap is gone.

I miss oil. I still think the game would be improved with fuel-infrastructure requiring thought and planning instead of just putting a different fort on a material spot or liquifying captured ships.

agreed shure the old system has problemas mrvecz pointed out in a rude manor. but thoes quarks also got me deeply into FTD as back when i had more drive to exist if you will the mangment aspect of the income, you had many things to balance. weaponwise i was rather bad back then :P still am in a few places but boy could i make ships that lived a fight for their intended design. the need of an oil refinery system is a lot better then what we got now as ya you got the ship supplies for active use but back in our old system we had also production lines to deal with. this gave me a slight factorio vibe and i enjoyed it. shure metal ended up becoming the one thing you needed above the rest but when they added steam power it gave wood a bit of a use for a bit. finding this old discussion is a bit of a good thing for me. i just loved the old in proably a few odd ways but it had its quarks im shure a number of us did enjoy (minus one fellow i have poked at before)

Bit of a necro, but since you asked ... :p

13.1.2016 - old build in the beta selection menu still has the old resources. That's the easiest and quickest way to go back in time.

The complicated option that requires a minimum of tech saviness is using the depot downloader, which will allow you to access even older game versions, or any single one that doesn't happen to have a beta associated with it. It's best in my experience to reference the old forum update thread with manifest upload dates to get the exact version you want.

Trouble is you can't use the latest vehicles / mods etc....... and didn't units all look very blocky way back in '16?
Ah well, at least you have the option to choose your poison!

Anyway, it was all an "excuse" to cover up the game's artificial stupidity. Multi-res ain't coming back. Ever. "Discussions" caused a lot salt back when they first reductionised it to "fuel", "energy" and "materials"....... and worse when they reductionised it all AGAIN further!

That is the least of your troubles in the old game versions, believe me. XD

Simple quality of life additions like the undo function didn't appear until 2019, for example. The game and tooltips were generally less transparent and informative and there was a plethora of more and less severe buggs.

But they have their charm. I occasionaly dig out really old game versions for a quick campaign playthrough. They were generally quite a bit easier too, with my current experience.
