Cause there really isn't one. Small caliber weapons are not well suited for armor, aspecially if it is layered. Your best bet is to go with an AP design and just hope shields won't reflect it

Well, how long do you want the shell?
APS shells have a maximum of 60 parts, so if you want to be really silly...
(You can hit the parts limit with 133mm or smaller guns)

Generally the best combination of damage & AP is ~2/3 gunpowder with sabot head & half/half solid AP/Sabot.
125mm (or 120mm) X 1m = 5x gunpowder, solid, sabot, sabot head
118.74mm X 2m = 11x gunpowder, base bleeder, 2x solid, 2x sabot, sabot head
As a note, stabilizer fins are good on bigger guns because their size is capped at 300mm.

If you really need to get through stacked armor, laser with 1+ Q-switch. It ignores armor stacking bonus and is easy to get 30 or 80 AP.
(because it ignores armor stack bonus, you only need 80 AP for heavy armor, 30 AP for metal)

Could also try HESH/HEAT, but they work better with bigger guns...

I found a nice little design for an 88mm shell. I load them in a small turret with 6 barrels. I'd have to look at it when I get home to get the exact details. It's pretty much an all sabot round though. It seems the smaller the shell, the faster you get them off the rack the better.

Yeah I have the exact build on a ship I've built, I guess I could fit the same thing on my Gunship in a smaller size.

i made an okay 30mm machine gun that can destroy metal blocks in 1 or 2 hits (1m)
the shell is 5 gun powder, 1 visible tracer, 3 frag warhead with cone of 1, and composite head.
its 321m/s so its okay for anti air

1degree frag got nerfed hard this patch, only does 25% listed damage now...

aw really? does it do full damage at 2 degrees?
Doombringer 24 JUL 2017 a las 3:05 p. m.
No, it scales from 25% at 1degrees to 200% at 180degrees.
Honestly it was stupid that frag were ever a good anti-armor round...

There are some modern airbusting artillery rounds that are capable of tearing up light armored vehicles but that's the only example of frag being good against armor that I can think of.

Well, a cheap CRAM cannon can still explosive through 4+m of metal reinforced by heavy armor still, so I'm not sure the point of the argument.

What I would do is just make a fast firing sabot with a lot of solid warheads behind it with one sabot warhead it's just because you wont get too much ap out of a 120 mm shell so just go with pure kinetic damage
X-heketchis_V44 24 JUL 2017 a las 5:17 p. m.
I have tryed sabot, HEAT, APHE and pure HE shells in a 120 mm cannon.
Sabot seems to be the best for it in the sabot head-solid shot-sabot body-x6 gunpowder casing setup if its 1 meter shells your using.

There is no argument, just stating how frag changed in v2.0.

CRAM can use hardener pellets to get silly high AP, but the rate of fire is so bad.
Also was talking about fragmentation, not explosives...
A 2m ball of explosives should be able to make a dent in armor ;)
