It toake more than 10hrs for everyone...
Most people use you tube videos but i personally got in just by playing around...
Try building something on your own and test it against built in vehicles...
Then just go by trial and error and it will work itself out...

just like, put ships wheel down, put a chair down right infront of it, put a propeller at the back, and rudder, then follow engine guide and put an engine on, put fuel on, then u can drive :D

Not if the thing capsizes.

@OP: I agree with luxon001 that figuring stuff out yourself is a good idea, but asking can also help. Especially if you're stuck or feel you found one solution, but an inefficient one (like simply using massive leaden keels for stability).
However, "how does the game work" - well, it works a little different for everyone. And there's too much to just "start explaining" most of the time.

I think, back when I started, it took me around 20ish hours to get a hang of the basic stuff, then the engine rework rolled out and I had to relearn the engines again -.-

100 hours it was for me

It took me probably about 50 hrs to understand the basics, but i was still learning stuff 150 hrs in. FTD has a steep learning curve, so just go into vehicle designer and try to build a basic ship with no weapons. Find out what works, what dosn't work, and then do it again until you think you have the basic premise on how to build. Then look into weapons. Weapons are there own thing entirely, each is different from the other completely. I reccomend to start with missiles or CRAM cannons, being the easiest weapons to learn how to set up. At this time, you can test your designs against others in the game, alter yours, even look at the other designs and possibly steal some ideas. You should go into the Neter campaign too. Eventually you can get into aircraft, which are complety different from ships, and submarines, which are different also. Looking at some online tutorials will probably help and also and some people also post tips for noobs on the forum.
What I recommend is, as the beginner, for the campaign. Spawn in a built in ship, a decent one costing 6000 resources or so, say from the onyx watch. And slowly upgrade and improve the ship as you play the campaign.
