Help placing first block to start building ship

I've gone through enough tutorials to know how to build a ship but my problem comes when actually trying to place a block to start with.

I'm trying to build in the vanilla vehicle designer where you spawn on a ship already. I'm using the keyboard build controls btw

I really want to make my own ship from the very first block plz help.

Once in the designer press esc and click on destroy all designs, then open the build menu and it will place a single wood block. Just use shift click on this block with another material if you want to replace it.

Or you just go onto the build menu>new object>vehicle

Also.. press caps lock to freeze the vehicle and it'll lift the origin block out of the water so it's easier to work on. And don't forget to build in the right direction. Or if you do, can can rotate the design when you reload it
