Alpha League

Are other players bots?
When I am playing against others nobody types back in chat.
Also, when it's the grab-box phase, every actor/player is moving straight to the box, nobody wobbles around or hesitates. I don't see any giveaways I am actually playing against other players.

So, am I playing against bots?
If no, there needs to be a better way to "not feel alone"

Hello my friends. Sorry about what you have experienced, and I am as upset as you guys, if not more, that we did not provide the ideal experience to you.

There are a few things I want to share with you:
1. Tikigod is actually right about backend stuff. We have only 1 backend engineer so we had to go with the rather simple way for the moment since he has all other stuff to take care of (combat/mission/social)...We hope we will resolve this as we gain more resource
2. We made a mistake by opening up 2 servers per region. This results from our regret from legacy version launch. We were featured by Steam while the server exploded, so the whole studio was too scared. We will only keep one server per region in next patch. Matchmaking is supposed to be better.
3. We did put in some bots because our current player base cannot support full player match during down time (4-5AM in each region for example), and we have no better solution to this yet. Hopefully the server merging and marketing work will solve this soon. Again, I feel sincerely sorry and I hope you stay.

Side note: I am deeply sorry for not being able to make you happy as a game dev. I just want to clarify that we are not trying to hunt you for the money, but we are just a 7 men studio who worked with our sweat and blood to finally ship this game. A lot of the things are not perfect at the moment, but we did what we can with the resource we have. Everyone has been working 14~15 hours (18 hours for myself and the chief engineer that the wifes have been complaining) a day to ship this game on time. Even for the commercial part, our current goal is to get a revenue that can support the server running and going.

And if you are leaving, I totally understand that all these behind the scene stuff don't matter to you because you have an ocean of games to choose from and you just want to have the best game to spend your time in. I just want to express that we are not money hunters, we are just a bunch of passionate devs who try to put together all the resource we have and give you a fun time. Yes it is a business, but before business, it is just gaming. Yet it is not good enough. I apologize and hope you have fun. And if we ever survive and improve, I wish you come back.

Yes. Very few are not bots.
They'll even match you against a bot of yourself. Usually the real players will chat.

It matters a lot to me as a player if I notice if there are bots or not. I want to know and experience PvP against players and not bots.

I'd rather devs plan a time for players to try plan and come and PvP rather than there always be a queue for bots

It's a mobile centric game, and on mobile it has been a long standard practise to just pair you up against AI controlled opponents based on other players.

So yes. You're playing about bots the vast majority of the time.

It's a cheap low effort way to make keep match queue times short without needing a strong consistent player-base.
There's a chat? They must've hidden it very well cuz I didn't even realize there was one..

Most likely.

To the Devs:

This is why I leave the game. I never want to see bots. Maybe only as a temporary substitute for a disconnected player.

bots ruin the game...
There should not be bots in rank. Normals is fine i guess.

It's how the majority of mobile games do things, you very rarely actually get matched with actual players in ranked modes of mobile games, rather it's AI/Bot controlled copies of players.

It's cheaper to do things that way, requires less backend networking knowledge and allows the developers to provide quick matchmaking queues because all they really to do is find other target accounts within a certain bracket and then pair you with AI controlled mirrors of those accounts.

And this game is very much a mobile game that's just also been crudely ported over to PC to try broaden the prospective userbase they can rope in to get them to make early cash store purchases before they realise how shallow and asset flip centric everything is.

Edit: To elaborate:

You'd essentially have it so when you go to queue a match, the game searches for any existing sessions that meet the ranking bracket that are still looking for players. If no session is found you create a new open session.

You then have a pre-established time duration set in the behaviour for how long the session will remain open waiting for other eligible players to queue up and be allocated to a open slot in the session.

In games that really want to ensure that ranked matches are kept fair and to allocate proper ELO adjustments to all players (and know they have a healthy player population), after the pre-established time duration has elapsed what they might then do is expand the bracket eligibility to widen the prospective number of players that can be assigned to the session.... so say initially the ELO range is between -100 and +100 of the player who created the session, the bracket might then be widened to between -200 and +200.

More typically for mobile and low population games they tend to not bother with the expanding bracket range phase and instead if not all slots are filled after that time duration, the session is then locked and the game begins to populate the remaining slots with AI/Bot controlled player agents, either randomly generated or based upon existing player accounts in order to give the illusion that you're playing against a full match of humans.

If a human player wins or loses, their ELO gets adjusted. If a AI/Bot controlled mirror of a account wins or loses, then nothing is done to the ELO rating of the account it's mirroring.

Makes sense, thanks for the write up.

Plenty of players are quiet, including several I know are real.
It isn't like we're doing the astronaut meme with "It's all bots? Always was."

Better than waiting forever on queues.

I have been testing this, I really think you add bots to lobbies far too soon. Like, last game, I waited for a minute and 18 seconds (EU) and there were zero players besides me in the lobby (or at least none that replied). I would have gladly waited for another minute at least to get at least a couple of live players.
On average the lobby is created in less than a minute with less than 3 real players. That is way too fast with way too many bots. Come on, even TFT waiting time is more than a minute...

Agreed, though that's from the perspective of a PC player wanting a more interesting match experience.

The main demographic this game is targeting is mobile gaming, and the attention span and willingness to wait for a match is much smaller with such audiences.

On PC, you can be doing something else on a second monitor or by alt-tabbing the game whilst you wait, always able to keep a eye on things.

On mobile, you're either using the app and just staring at it, or you're not using the app and you've forgotten about it.

Plus the additional expectation from mobile gaming audiences for quick delivery of what it is they want.... if a mobile gamer had to wait 3 minutes for a match, I suspect a lot of their brains would collapse from instant gratification withdrawal symptoms.

As on mobile, 3 minutes is the time they could have digested anywhere from 30 to 100 "shorts" on Youtube, IG, Tiktok or whatever other platform, and so to their brain is the equivalent of content consumption eternity.
