I am playing the Grand Campaign and in the 1941 "DLC". Over time a regular core unit will get say a +1 Attack...+2 Defense...etc. bonus. Do those same units get additional bonuses as the campaign progresses? Are these rewards based upon a units experience level over the course of the campaign?

Heroes add what they show. IE +1 attack etc. Units gain experience over time that improves the performance of that unit. That is why using elite replacements is so important as each time you use regular replacements the unit loses experience points.
Heroes are awarded for kills. If you have 50+ you have a chance to get your first hero with each kill and at 100+ or 200+ another one respectively.

They are randomnly generated (Name, flavor text) and so is their bonus (between +1 and +3, type). There is no disticntion between 1st, 2nd and 3rd hero, they are all generated by the same ruleset. You technically could end up with 3 identical heroes (even the name!), and you can stack their boni (e.g. 3 heroes with attack +3 = +9 attack).
Furthermore there is no distinction for unit classes either, meaning everyone can earn the same boni, even if they are useless for that class (e.g. defense and ini for artillery and flak).

If you open up the unit info panel there is a tab with it's battle history. There you also find your current heroes and their capabilities.

Def and ini are not useless on any unit. Yes there are better hero types for these type units but no increase of any type is useless.
AA counter attacks (enemy turn) always have ini 100, which is not beatable by any aircraft. Normal attacks with AA (your turn) will not be counterfired by aircraft, so ini is 100% useless in it's primary function. Same for artillary support fire and your attacks at range.

The amount of times when you use AA and artillery units in melee combat during the campaign you can count on one hand, because it's very rare (or you are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ up way more than the average player). Just to put up some figures, for every 100 attacks I make one mistake and the enemy reaches my support units. That would make attack heroes 100 times more usefull than ini or in other words ini has 1% the efficiency of an attack bonus. You are technically correct that 1% efficiency is not entirely useless, but defacto it is. Period.

Defense is not as bad as ini, because aircraft attacks on your backline happen more frequently than actual flanking manouvers by the AI. But it is still worse than attack heroes on units which are basically glass cannons and that is what you need to buff to make the most use out of it. Ini and defense is like putting an extra 20mm of armor on a light tank. It's not useless, but if you consider a light tank's primary defense strategy (1st to 4th layer of the survivability onion) then you can clearly see how that is mere window dressing than actually helpfull.
