I just bought GC 39 and 40 this morning and have only had a quick look, not actually played them yet. From what it says if you have 2 consecutive GC's then if you play the first one and complete it your army is saved and when you start the next one you get the option to continue with the same units you finished the previous campaign with.

You should get all the Grand Campaign' DLC, it's really great (even if i'm still at 1942 east, i'm sure the rest is great too).

As cerberusiv said, all your units (and prestige) are saved when you finish a grand campaign. So if you're careful, you can have your 1939 units in 1945. You create a bond with your units, that's really nice ! Thus you'll need to think carefully what will be your core even in 1939 because you have to be prepared for the hard years of the end of the war. You also have to save a maximum of prestige from 39 to 41 (as i said you import your units and prestige from a year to another) and you'll probably need a lot of it for the hard years. It's a nice challenge.

Note that the grand campaign split in 1942. You cannot import your units of 1942 East to play 1942 west then and vice versa (logical), you'll have to import your units of 1941. West campaign is also different. You can only carry something like 9 units from your core and your prestige is reseted (it is supposed that most of your core fights in the east). West is also harder. I read that it was meant to play after 1945 east (supposing that you still need to learn how to master the game) and I think it's more about defensive missions where the Allies are far stronger than you. So maybe you should start with all the east campaign if you don't want to buy everything (but it must be cheaper to buy everything than only some packs I think).

I would definitely recommend the grand campaign IF you like the base game. As someone who loved the original Panzer General, I bought this game in the hopes that it would be as good as the original. After only playing the tutorial I went and bought the entire grand campaign bundle :steamhappy:
Currently playing the 1941 campaign and having a blast.

I have the same question about the base campaigns. Can I transfer troops over to next battles, campaigns or is that exclusively a feature of the grand campagan DLCs?

In all campaigns you transfer your troops and prestige.
