Why No Panzer General?

I wonder why STEAM hasn't yet released Panzer General and Panzer General 2 for sale? They've sold games I never thought would again be playable on a PC, including such oldies as Darklands, a game with an extremely small number of followers.

I get the feeling that there's some sort of legal hassle draped around the games. I know Panzer General and Panzer Corps are very similar, but Panzer General 2 was an entirely different game.

PG was made by SSI, which doesn`t exist anymore. No clue who is owning the rights of PG now.

Darklands was made by a company that no longer exists. Ditto Baldur's Gate, and many others, that are also for sale on STEAM.

There is the freeware Open General game, i think they say it's like the old PzG games. You can try this. I also think it's available on Android tablets too, if i remember well.

There is PGForever (if it is still out there), PG and AG recreated to run on post Win XP versions of Windows. Original maps, campaigns and units but a different AI.

PG2 is available from GOG. I have it and it worked OK for me on 8.1 although I haven't tried since I moved to 10.

PG2 does say it works on Win 10 in game description on GOG, and PG 3D Assault which is also available

PG works fine ( it can be found on the web) if you use DOSBOX.

Anybody ever check if Star General worked in DOSBOX?

Very interesting thread. I had not heard about either Open General or PGForever, I'll have to look for those. Anybody know any active links to those?

EDIT IN:

Both links seem active and have downloads listed (for Open General and PGForever). I'm going to have to try these out during Christmas Holidays. Thanks to Cerburusiv and Cuqueen for mentioning these.

If anybody finds a way to run Star General, let me know. The one thing I really liked about Star General was that it really had two levels of tactics ... the first way on the interplanetary map, and the other was actually fighting with armor, etc on actual planet land surfaces. So you had a fleet interplanetary game and you had planets with battles similar to Panzer General on it. In its own odd way, made you think of what battles in Master of Orion 1 and 2 would be if played in Star Fleet General and Dropship General ... had its moments.

Tried off the CD, did'nt like it, kept saying it was a windows game, and would'nt install. And woun't install or run normally under Win 10 as well.

I think there are free PzG missions made by some person on Slitherine site for download. I am not sure, you can look for it.

Ubisoft owns Panzer General, and as expected, they have turned into into an online browser game.
