A very different type of game - but my favorite series of all strategy games - is Total War. That combines a Civilization type turn-based strategy layer with real time battles. The big thing about the series are the battles - they are quite superb. But it is the strategy layer that makes me care about the battles. The pinnacle of the series for me is Attila Total War, specifically the Western Roman Empire campaign. Trying to fend of the Huns and other barbarian hordes is incredibly challenging and immersive. I've sunk 2700+ hours into Attila, just playing as the Romans.
You mentioned SMG: you might like Civil War Ultimate General and Ultimate Admiral Age of Sail. They use TW battle mechanics, but focus on improving their realism and dispense with the Civilisation type province building layer.
A final quirky recommendation is Victory and Glory: Napoleon. It is based on a board game and is of similar complexity to Panzer General (i.e. it's beer and pretzels wargame). The strategy layer has you moving armies around a Risk type map, with card draw mechanics adding flavoursome events (e.g. there's one for the Treaty of Tilsit etc.). It does a really good job of simulating the cut and thrust of Napoleon's strategic offensives. The battle layer is very abstract - the battle is divided into 3 wings or lanes, and you win if you breakthrough one. But I found it a lot of fun and it captures combined arms pretty well. Napoleonic warfare is my favorite period and I find VGN did a FAR better job of capturing its flavour than Napoleon Total War. I wasn't such a big fan of Victory and Glory: American Civil War, although the subject may appeal to you.
