Kraut is a slang for German. Just like Yankee/Yank is for an American or Pom/Pommy is for a Britisher.

Kraut: (kraʊt/) (noun informal offensive)
a German.

kraut simply is something to eat. Your "translation" and meaning for the word is a secondary meaning and so just offensive when said to a german/about a german.
Kraut itself has no offensive meaning nor is it bound to being german, nor is it a slang word for germans.

Um, it is offensive, is about Germans, and is a slang word for German. Popularised in WW2.
