In case others encounter the same problem as us while they develop a permanent solution, my friend developed a possible workaround:

Obvious caveat: It doesn't solve the original problem and you need to understand that you're editing a game file. It's also possible it puts you in a worse state than before, so definitely heed the warning about creating a backup file.
If this violates any rules or the developers or community manager feels this could be dangerous information, I completely understand if you wish to remove this post.
