How to fish?

I talked to the mermaid. I got the fishing pole. Buy there are no directions? i left click to cast, some mini game comes up, but it doesn't tell you what keys to use? I tried left mouse, right mouse and space bar. they did nothing. escape got me out of the mini game.

And for those using controller, it is left thumb stick, which is slightly more intuitive/easier in my opinion... but still among the worst fishing minigames I've experienced.
