Also it is kind of sad how the only modern RTS games are paradox games, they're not really what I expect from RTS games, despite being really good.
"Without innovating"? Really? Have you played any of the maps? Have you met the Stormgate beta Discord? Players complaining about those exact 'without innovating' new mechanics? :)
Anyway. The fun thing - which I think, the op was referring to - is, that visually, Stormgate and Battle Aces 'look' similar.
I myself am just glad, that the cat is now out of the bag ... officially.
It remains to be seen what Kim really means about "we want to eliminate the tedious clicks", he said in the dev blog feature video from a while ago and in this Game Fest reveal. To me, this sounds like 'watering down' what makes this special 1v1 StarCraft style RTS games exceptional (Chrono boost, Queen inject).
But, it makes a new RTS game also more accessible, to a wider audience. I get it, from a business point of view. Nothing wrong with that, if the "endless strategy" claim has a grain of merit.
No 'tedious' clicks, though right now, sounds to me like "don't worry about base building - you just fight", like in Sudden Strike (1999) or equal games. Nothing innovative about that?
But, I am not going to doubt David Kim. They are going to show more. He - and the people around him - must have some surprises and aces up their sleeves. Smart people.
[EDIT] ... having seen now the gameplay video and listened to Wardi & Artosis commentary, I now see more of what the 'innovation' part is about, in this game.
Free basic scouting. No worker building. Instant units. You and your opponent know each others 'decks' and you have to quickly react. Switching tech. Committing to builds. Reacting to the opponents tech. Fast gameplay.
Lot of what StarCraft 1 + 2 gives you, but in a more simplified way - which is not a bad thing, per se.
It probably also allows weaker or new players to experience 'tech switches' and allowing them to react to the opponents strategies, instead dying instantly to early-game rushes, or popular 'builds-of-the-week' on the ladder, which are still the most common experience for low-skill players?
Yeah. The 'deck-building part' also gave me DoW3 vibes (hearing, one of the DoW PvP devs is on this game's team as a lead - no wonder?), when I tried the skirmish PvP mode. I hated DoW3 just like any other player, when it came out. But, later on, I did find things about it that I actually, genuinely liked. We all rush very quickly to judgements? A human nature thing? Our brain needs to put 'new things' in old cups (aka 'context')?
Skylords Reborn i presume?
