What exactly is the point of defector missions?
I appreciate that they are there (they are very fun to play) but I just wondered if they are somehow important for the rest of the game. Do they unlock important things or anything along those lines?

+1. same question.

I was literally just about to ask that same question. I thought maybe you can play as this defector character later on, but that doesn't seem to be the case. The defector character "auto-retires" immediately after the mission, your character doesn't get anything for that, so...what's the idea behind the defectors? Is it for achievement only or...?

I think they're just supposed to be cool prefab challenges.

As far as I can tell they're just extra challenges. I think you earn some money for the character you were before you selected it but I could be wrong. Also I thought the levels were pre made but they're random just like everything else.

Yeah, just challenges. You generally earn about 1,000 credits from them, but it goes to the defector character, so there's not much point to earning any.

So there is no point to them? Not that that's bad, it's just not clear in the game what the point is, if it's just challenges it would be neat to see that noted somewhere in the game.

I've been finding that they're useful for learning different ways to play, because I can't just walk in with my regular loadout.

The one where I had 2x self-charging shields, and all of the enemies had shotguns - that was pretty fun. (Even though I completely forgot that I could pick up their weapons. :-p )

They're just a nice challenge. I had one where I started spaced without a pod and had the goal to assassinate someone on a ship. Fun working that one out ;)

Why do they even give money? It's like a carrot you will never reach.

So, here's my dumb question. How do you start a defector mission? The map dialog box says to click on a friendly base to start a defector mission, and it shows I have 1 defector mission.

I clicked on all the blue bases, or whatever all the blue and red locations are. I clicked on the blue ones, that I assumed were friendly, but nothing started a defector mission.

What am I doing wrong? I'm just starting the game by the way. Not very far into it at all, but I was curious what the defector missions were since they are called out on the galaxy map.

From the strategy screen where you liberate stations, click on a friendly one with an exclamation point on it. That should start it.

Hmm, I guess I haven't found the strategy screen yet. Is that the same as the galaxy map in the base directly to the north of where you select missions? If so, that's where I was, but I guess I didn't see a base with an exclamation point on it. I'll look again.

If the strategy screen is something else, please clarify. Thank you so much!

Yep, the map in the top right of the station is the strategy map. Every station has a defector mission. Just click on the station when you're in the strategy map, and it will take you to the defector mission.

Challenge mode. If you have never played the mission of Dan THE LEGEND Hardcastle, I suggest you do. It's like being the director of a Die-Hard/Terminator movie. XD
