It's 2024 and we still can't jump in a game
Why? Add a jumping button. I don't like being glued to the floor. Elden Ring did it and the world didn't end, so surely it can be done in a souls-like.

It’s clearly by design. Play their game true to the artist’s vision or don’t play.

If you want jumping play 2D platformers lol (only slightly joking). The jumping is ER did lead to a lot of useless exploration, because it allowed players to get to places that were literally just set dressing with no benefit to the player.

I would also argue the addition of jumping in ER kind of hurt the dungeon crawling feel when exploring legacy dungeons, mainly because it was even easier to rush past content and jumping on things the enemies could never reach you at, so it took away that grounded feel the past souls games had. I would have been fine if a stamina requirement was placed on in in that game.

Imo when a game does not have jumping it FORCES the player to have to interact with the content is some way, rather then jumping on a high platform and running past everything to avoid content (at least in 3D games).

Wo Long for example did jumping better then ER, because of its tighter level design, it was not overpowered (no jump attack spam) and the fact that enemies can follow you to higher places if they needed to. Also jumping in that game was limited to an extent so you could not abuse jumping attacks (like you an in ER) to get through 99% of the content.

mmmm I think the jumping isn't what gives Elden Ring the problems it has. Being able to get high ground is expansive to me, specifically because you're opening up an entirely different concept and I'm realizing more and more that these games feel like an anime fantasy and that is not an accident. But the point of a lot of those dungeons is really because they're trying to have it both ways. That is a more meaningful issue than necessarily going "jumping in and of itself removes grounded feel." Especially when games like Sorcerian and ye olde JRPGs exist where the grounding is achieved differently, like letting a dragon instantly kill you with burning flame breath.

You want to introduce a new concept, then the game leads you to its own bloat. Giving the player something to look at or think about has been present, arguably, in so many of those games but jumping is this seeming inclusion that makes Elden Ring feel like an exception. There's way more going on with that game's design, but you definitely don't get the "teehee can't get through here" moments that certain modern takes are just flagrantly engaged in.

My issue with Khazan is that it draws attention to itself in a negative way when it's like "We totally gotta bring back waist high/climbable/jumpable looking obstacles." At least have the sense to make a cliff. The map design is weak, and I don't begrudge anyone asking these people copying homework to stop bullshitting the player. Ultimately, I didn't find myself as annoyed because Khazan has much more competent and coherent design for what it is going for than what I got out of Wukong.

♥♥♥♥ all that nonsense discussed above!

I want to feel immersed in my games.

Is it so crazy to want to play as a berserker afflicted by the curse of Khazaan: a freaking almighty god of destruction and decay that slays dragon kings and pillages entire nations with but a mere sway of the blade - only to find out, that my ass can't jump? Really?

What a joke.

Maybe he's so powerful he doesn't need to.

He'd probably get arrested if he ever attempted to play basketball.
