This is by definition hiding a leveling mechanic.
And when you see some menus in other menus well curiosity is supposed to happen and make you push the button.
I can assure you I didn't speed through the game. I searched through every corridor, trying to find everything I possible could (hence why I had over 200 vengeance points). But an upgrade system hidden in a log menu? I don't think many people would've expected that. Also, I'm someone who didn't revisit memories because I just follow the story as I play.
