You can open a more info screen that explains the effects. The key is shown at the bottom of the screen.

It is additional damage that stacks 5 times and resets when you hit with an attack and maximum stacks.

Butcher set is great mid-to-late game set that works very well as long as you are fine with Howling Blade. I used it all the way until last few bosses and only changed because there is certain boss that is higher above the ground and can not be properly hit by Howling Blade.
