Are there multiple save files?
I've never looked into it but after debating with a friend whether to start over with a new weapon before going into NG+ with my current save, we came to this question

Wouldn't want a new game to automatically overwrite my current one

Oh yikes, that sucks hard for the people who want to get the summon achievement and are forced to abandon their current save lol, which is the case with my friend, that sucks

But thanks! I'll just switch builds in NG+ then.

Not true, you can have multiple save files.

If you choose New Game it will start a new save.
If you press Continue it will load into the most recently used save.
If you press Load you can choose which save file you want to play
