Reflection and counter attack timings are unreasonable
The timing and positioning required for reflection and counter attacks to connect and actually work are unreasonable to the point that they fail 75% of the time. The implementation just isn't practical for most players, IMO. Even with the skill upgrade to make reflection faster, it is still extremely hard to actually use it. It's probably the most unintuitive parry/deflect-like move I've seen in a game like this.

Trying to explain what? These games have always been about memorization above everything else.
See guys? They still don't understand.

Why even play these games in the first place if you hate how the combat works?

He's just saying that abilities like reflect are kind of pointless for normal play, which is true.

Reflect has really strict and awkward timing, which makes it difficult to land. To land reflects consistently you need to have the boss mastered, but if you've mastered the boss you could beat him easily without risking reflects.

Reflecting is impractical, and something you'd only really do to show off against a boss you can already beat easily.

I used Reflection during my first playthrough quite a lot from Viper all the way to the end of the game and it helped trivialize a lot of bosses. I'm not touched by god so it can definitely be used during "normal play". All you have to do is remember one or two key attacks that you're going to be using it on.

When I first started I used it a bit myself, but as bosses started going down easier it became a pointless risk. Unless you get the reflect timing down really fast you'll kill the boss quicker just letting him destroy himself on your brink guards and followups, instead of breaking your stride to eat damage on failed reflect attempts.

It never stopped working for me so I just kept using it until the end. No reason not to try to utilize such a powerful mechanic. Any failure is just a stepping stone towards successful usage of the skill.
Counter attack timing is alright, but I have no idea how reflection works so I don't use it at all.

I thought the same until I started to realize that the timing depends on the attack of the enemy. An enemey might have 2 fury attacks but each one has different timings. Once attack you might have to counter right at the start of the attacks wind up but the other it will be right at the end as it's about to hit you. sam goes for reflection

The active frames are in the middle of the animation. Your character flashes white when the reflection is active.
