Total Defense/Attack on equipment?

Does anyone know how these work? I have near identical helmets with only a difference of 4 defense but one has an effect that adds nearly double the defense while the other only gives a 5% stamina recovery buff. Is the double defense one leagues better? Or am I getting baited by big number? Does "Total Defense" just mean the defense stat, or is there some metric the game uses to calculate how the bonus effect on equipment can attribute to the defensiveness of an armor piece? Same question for weapons too.

Total defense is summary of base defense stat and the random attribute stat. Sometime you got another defense buff on random atrribute that's why the total defense is much higher than other gears with same level.
