Took me 20-25 tries to beat his a**, wtf is wrong with his moveset??? It didnt seem particularly difficult but he kept wiping the floor with me! Was it the movement and combat? Was it input lag? (Cant be, I disabled FG and Boost) or was it just nerves?

If this boss was so tough wtf are the rest of the bosses like???

It's weapon balance and also the stupidly high HP they gave every boss. Unfortunately, the next boss is even worse in this regard.
I found the first phase to be the hardest. The reason was that he has a massive wind up on most of his attacks, making me miss a lot of brink counters. Second phase was much easier to predict.

Took me about 25-30 tries.

You're clearly a newb if you can't adjust to how the game works differently. Learn how the combat works, where you can cancel out of and where you can't. What works and what doesn't. The game is responsive but I think you're confusing the lack of responsiveness for certain animation lock during attacks. Pretty sure you cannot dodge out of everything.

Learn the game. If you genuinely beat all those games without relying on cheese, this should not be an issue at all.
This is not aboud adjusting to game mechanics. Viper is completely broken and it's not a fun challenge. It feels like an uphill battle where you are a mere and against a tiger. Your attacks just deal scratches to his health bar, and in top of that, he has TWO damn health bars. And you only have four heals.

This fight is completely unfair and honestly, I'm thinking about dropping the game because this does not feel right. This boss is unnecessarily difficult. I could somewhat understand it if it was the final boss. But this is an early game boss. It's insane.

Took me ten tries without any summons .. is he hard, yeah but he isn’t that bad at all. He is a test to see if you understand the game. Hunter gear giving you 25% extra damage against him. Spear and stun spam him pretty easily. Also using your lances when he’s in his tornado phase just to get even more damage off.

It’s not the games fault your refuse to use the mechanics and tools they give you in the game. I had harder time with pre nerf rahdan in Elden Ring.
I can assure you that none of the next bosses are as difficult as Viper.

Viper took me the most amount of tries in my 25 hours of playtime so far.

I'm still stuck on him. About 32 tries, and last time I went through phase 1-2 with only one heal. Still can't reliably counter his lunge.

And I reliably make it to phase 4. If I had any consumables left, he'd be dead.

This is a boss that is borderline unbeatable at my skill level at low level and poor gear, but the way the game is designed, you keep getting stronger.

So a combination of stats improving and you skill growing will defeat him.

His lunge you want to normal dodge not parry then you can spam light attack with spear and stun lock him until you’re out of Stam lol

So that was a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ lie, Volbaino took me 60 tries I leveled up 5-6 times off him FFS.
Had to switch to spear for that I've never given up Greatsword in any game but this one forced me to. Why was he so tanky? Dude barely took any damage!

What i dont understand about viper is that he does not seem to fit in the game. He feels like Yellow long from Wukong, even more so if you fight him with the spear like i did.

But that mighty ape has infinite stamina, or do i remember that wrong? I made a hitless fight with yellow long actually.

Viper took me way to long because you need to back off. Even if you would be able to dodge all his moves or defelct them, you just run out of stamina. It feels super weird.

I just ended up avoding his super long combos.

Also pefect dodge and counter feels so much more efficient that defelct? Deflect seems bad if you consider risk and reward.

Phase 2 is not too bad if you avoid the roundhouse swings that cover 180° in front of him. I could never get used to the timing.

I beat him but honestly he feels a bit over the top for an early skill check. A bit less HP would and he'd still be fine.
I spent a good hour on him as well, but the fight was awesome!

He's no Malenia nor Consort Radhan though. Great boss!

(Maybe I'm a bit advantaged since I love learning boss patterns at the point I full-parry Malenia in Elden Ring and am a souls-like veteran... But oh well...)

btw this guy is just a Fallout 4 Deathclaw with a spear. Or am i'm the only one that saw that :D

Volbaino looks doable. At first he seemed impossible. Took me 10 tried to get his stamina bar down once.

During I realized this boss is easier to brink dodge than brink block: you have more openings to damage.

And after 13 tries, I died first time to his fire phase. But he was around 30% HP by then.

So yeah, tomorrow he should go down in 10+ more attempts.

I had a hard time on it also at first. But once i beat it then i was able to beat him in the first try every single attempt after that. So it is a skill thing. Once you ''get'' it then he will never beat you again.
Super mediocre / terrible Souls-like player here. I don't take any pride in trying to prove myself. I use mimic in Elden Ring, I watch a video if I can't figure out a boss' moves after 15-20 tries and then usually take 10-15 more. I usually use heavy/tank builds because I think they're more forgiving to those us of with old man reflexes.

Anyway, since there's so much debate about the difficulty of Viper early in the game, I figured I'd share my win to hopefully give some hope to the other terrible players like me. Seems like people only upload videos of themselves being awesome and crushing bosses, so here's my video of just trying to stay alive and cautiously picking my moments to do some damage. After trying and failing over and over again to use the Reflection ability (I just can't figure out the delayed timing), I resigned myself to simply playing a very slow, deliberate strategy of nothing but brink guards and waiting for windows to use spirit attacks. Despite my numerous physical errors, I still managed to take him down on only my 3rd trip to the second phase (probably 25 attempts overall, but about half of those were trying to figure out how to time Reflection with no luck).

Got Volbaino too.

Almost easy.

Here is the thing: this isn't DS. You need to be aggressive AF. I switched around my build, selected aggressive options. You need to be on a constant offensive. Well, if you are skilled enough.

Me, I took every window I could, while still having some defensive downtime and making tons of mistakes.
