Yep, its even explicitly stated that the training ground is used for that exact reason by Shadow Heart.

... thats not true at all. You dont get any rewards from training grounds nor can you complete the bonus rewards.

It's confusing, but you have to defeat the mob on a level to get the reward. The training is imply for practice.
