At first, yes. Only after the third boss you unlock a feature that allows you to upgrade the spirits HP, attack and stamina. To max upgrade them requires a lot of farming though.

I haven't used them at all since I am going for the achievement but I have been told that max upgraded summons are actually very very strong and can help in end game boss fights. But the grind for the soul orbs you need to get there is significant.

You need to buff them before they are useful, however, there is certain boss in mid-game where having spirit with you is difference between difficult & annoying and easy & chill fight.

Also, you need to keep boss aggro on you because even buffed spirit will get destroyed if a boss focuses on them for a longer time.

Just upgraded mine to max, and they got so strong you can stun-lock any side-bosses or bosses with a white stagger bar. I recommend just playing without them.
