I'll get the special red attack parry right on time and it still won't count
ReDsKuLL Mar 28 @ 12:02pm
This whole thing is going to be spoilers. First, I'm assuming you mean Volby, the Minotaur. The very first thing to note is that you'll take chip damage if you try to block the spike when it's red hot. The hammer doesn't do this, just the spike and ONLY when it's heated up. Dodge those attacks, instead. Next, dodging lowers the build up of the fire status. Also, whenever he licks the spike, he's telegraphing that he's about to light the whole floor on fire. When he does that, change elevation (Climb up the ladder or jump down from the ledge). If he lodges the spike in ground, there's two different aoe damage bursts: the first is when it plunges into the ground and the second when he pulls it out. While you have a little time between them to attack, make sure you're out of range so you don't burn.

Thanks for goat tips. Any more? I happen to have learned these by now. On maybe my 30th attempt.

Just some quick tips:
1. Get ring and amulet with fire resistance, it helps a lot with the build up of the debuff
2. Use Javelins when Volbaino is hammering or pulling the nail from the ground, especially in phase 2 when you are on the upper platform. You can deal around 3k per hit when targetting head.
3. You need to get timing of counter on his red attack preceded by series of overhead smashes--this is great opportunity to stagger the boss and get some serious damage in.
4. You want to push the boss to next phase with as little health as possible. Try to time your stagger in a way that you can get brutal attack in just before he switches to next phase (around 70% health).

The red attack counter hasn't worked at all so far. I just get hit :estusfull:
What the ♥♥♥♥. When it does the aoe burning ground thing, after you go up the ladder, that aoe area doesn't stop burning. It just stays that way. Then it does it again. And it just remains, the entire floor on fire on both levels. What the ♥♥♥♥ are you supposed to do? That isn't fair.

It worked for me, you need to wait until last moment. Counter is the opposite of Reflection--Reflection need to be fired off way in advance of the hit connecting due to its additional animation, Counter is pretty much instant, as far as I can tell, and need to be pressed just before the hit connects.
Volbaino's red attack at the end of chain of overhead smashes is relatively easy to time, there are later bosses that have multi-stage red attacks where it is not clear whether to press the button on first or second swipe.

You are too slow. You need to kill it relatively fast when you are in the upper part, you are running against timer.

I could not possible be going faster.
I've been watching videos and I'm not doing anything any differently. This seriously makes no ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sense to me.
In one of the videos I watched, that burning ground circle aoe actually went away. For me, its permanent until the whole arena is burning ground. Why isn't it going away for me?

highly recommend getting timings for reflect and counter.

I never saw him set the entire floor on fire both levels and I went pretty slow. He would set the entire top floor on fire, but the bottom floor was just a large area on fire rather than the whole floor. You are probably panicking.

When it slams the nail into the ground, then pulls it out again and leaves a circle aoe of fire. Its not that big, but it doesn't go away. And it'll do the move again. I ended up with maybe 90% of the ground covered and just couldn't do anything. Not panicking, just telling you what literally happened.

That didn't happen for me either. The AoE does vanish after some time which is relatively long but considering there is a lot of space I had no issues dealing with it, although I did beat his 2nd phase fairly quickly.

Maybe there is a bug or maybe not, can't tell like this.
