That's not entirely true. You can take different routes in both games. Sekiro is a tad more linear than Dark Souls, but linear means you can only go fowards or backwards with little side exploration.
Considering this game is heavily mission based, as such it's quite linear. Nioh is incredibly linear too.
Linear doesn't mean bad btw, but it's focus is deff not exploration.
The most linear you can have it, Nioh and Sekiro maps is less linear and has more exploration depth and secrets to it, Nioh 2 is the superior game, I wish I had started replaying that game instead after finishing this game, gear system in this game is more quality of life which is the only thing I think it does better than Nioh 2's gear system, though Nioh 2's gear per say is more fun though the changing stats with the exp thing in this game is the most fun thing with the gear. Sekiro is as linear as it can get in terms of gear. The gear in Khazan system in this game pretty fun actually, still not as exciting as Nioh is what can roll on the gear. Every weapon have the same stat scaling, in Nioh it could by dynamic depending on how the stats rolled.
Hey atleast they gave it some though with the gear and stuff, still I feel it misses alot of marks, it has no ragdolls physics so that also makes it more linear. NG+ is like super easy mode which Nioh 2 is not so much at all because Nioh 2 is far more punishing I would say for some of the endgame bosses.
You can have more builds in this game because you can make tankier builds in general.
In Nioh it was pretty hard making a really tanky build but not in this game.
You start steamrolling everything pretty quickly in this game which also make it more linear. Besides some bosses on normal.
If you never played Nioh game before it is a good game though. It can't be compared much to Dark Souls besides the teleport stones and leveling by them, still Diablo had those teleport stones but not the leveling up by them.
Unlocking shortcuts doesn't matter as much in NG+ because you quickly learn every encounter from the first playthrough and learn how to avoid mistakes so you run the maps pretty quickly, which also make it more linear than Nioh.
It is easier to navigate in this game than Nioh 2.
Nioh 2's endgame system was lacking in depth but still has more going for it. Nioh 2 is lackluster due to the lack of procedural levels which is the flaw these 3'd person DIablo/Darksouls mix games has to them, enemies aren't procedurally placed which makes replayability suffer. You'll still get alot of hours from it though I feel the hours I spent in Nioh was more fun, still this game has some innovation which it took from inspiration from Diablo, Nioh and Dark Souls, still it is not good in all cases, Nioh has a better melee skill system. I didn't like the talisman system of Nioh and never touched magic besides some enchant weapon stuff.
Khazan is level based and it's not a straight line but not very far from it.
